1. overview and preparation
before you start, prepare three things: a taiwanese native ip phone card (physical sim or esim), a smartphone that supports mobile data and vpn, and a trustworthy vpn service (it needs to provide taiwan nodes and support kill switch).
it is recommended to first confirm the local laws and the real-name policy of the telecom operator, comply with the regulations and retain the proof of purchase.
2. purchase and receive phone cards
it can be purchased at local convenience stores, airport counters or trusted online sellers (with reviews and after-sales service) in taiwan. if you choose esim, the seller usually provides activation information via email or qr code.
real card: after receiving it, use the card extraction pin to insert it into the phone; esim: use the phone camera to scan the seller's qr code or manually add esim information in the settings. if you encounter an activation code or web page activation, just follow the seller's instructions to complete it.
3. activation and recharge steps
after activation, follow the seller's instructions (sometimes you need to send an sms or visit the activation webpage) to complete. before using it for the first time, it is recommended to recharge enough data or purchase a weekly/monthly package. keep customer service contact information for inquiries.
if you cannot access the internet, first check whether the sim is inserted correctly, whether the card is selected as a "mobile data" card, and make sure cellular data is enabled on the phone.
4. apn (access point) setting method
android: settings > network & internet > mobile networks > access point name (apn) > new. fill in the apn field provided by the operator (usually "internet" or a value specified by the operator), save and select the apn.
iphone: settings > cellular network > cellular data network, enter the apn information given by the operator. if the operator supports automatic configuration, the settings will usually be automatically issued after the card is inserted.
5. select and install vpn applications
choose a service that supports taiwan servers, a no-log policy, and turns on kill switch and wireguard or openvpn. view privacy policy and third-party audit records.
download the official client from the app store or google play, log in with the registered account, and grant the necessary vpn permissions (establish vpn connection, always on, etc.).
6. enable vpn and always-on settings on mobile networks
select the taiwan node in the vpn client and connect to it to test connectivity first. turn on the "kill switch/block unencrypted connections" option to prevent the real ip from being revealed when disconnected.
android: you can enable "always-on vpn" in the system vpn settings and check "block unsafe connections"; ios: some vpns support "connect on demand" or enable automatic reconnection in the app.
7. test ip and prevent dns and webrtc leaks
use a browser to visit ipleak.net, dnsleaktest.com and other websites, and confirm that the displayed ip is a taiwanese ip and that the dns server also points to the vpn or non-local isp. if the real ip or dns appears to be non-vpn, check the dns/ipv6 leakage settings of the vpn.
mobile browsers (such as firefox) can configure or install extensions to disable webrtc, or turn off webrtc in the browser settings to prevent lan/local ip leaks.
8. additional privacy protection suggestions and faqs
try to enable vpn when only using mobile data to avoid accidentally connecting to untrusted networks on public wi‑fi. turn off unnecessary location and background synchronization to reduce metadata exposure. change sim or vpn nodes regularly and pay attention to the configuration files pushed by the operator.
9. question: will using a vpn significantly reduce the speed of mobile internet access?
a: using a vpn will incur a certain amount of latency and bandwidth overhead, which is limited by the quality of the vpn server, the encryption protocol (wireguard is usually faster than openvpn), and the physical distance to the server. choosing high-quality nodes close to taiwan and a vpn that supports high-speed protocols can minimize speed loss.
10. question: how to specifically prevent dns or webrtc leaks?
a: enable "use vpn's dns" on the vpn client or manually specify the dns provided by the vpn; enable ipv6 leak protection on the client or disable ipv6 (if ipv6 cannot be processed through the vpn tunnel). disable webrtc on the browser or use a private browser. for mobile devices, browsers that support webrtc control can be used first.
11. question: does purchasing a phone card in taiwan require real-name registration?
a: the policy may change at different times. many operators require identification when purchasing a prepaid card (especially when purchasing at the airport, over the counter or online). it is recommended to confirm the real-name requirements with the seller or operator before purchasing and comply with local regulations. it is not recommended to try to circumvent real-name registration.
